Global Climate Strike: UK Student Climate Network + YouthStrike4Climate

I attended the Climate Strike on 20th September 2019 at Millbank, London with my brother and our pillowcase placard stating:

"There is no Planet B"
"The planet is changing, why aren't we?"

It was a strike from school and work about saving the planet and humans from the climate crisis. It is such a diverse issue with so many different people already affected and so many people who will be affected and a lot of the time they are the people with the least influence. These strikes aim to raise awareness of the issue and persuade the governments and establishments around the world to just do something about it.

It was a strike inspired by Greta Thunberg and her School Strike 4 Climate which she started in August 2018 and has now encouraged millions of people around the world to strike for the climate as well. It is such an amazing cause and I have felt really inspired in my activism by the school children like Greta Thunberg who have the courage to strike for our climate, environment and the future of our planet and species.

We heard speeches from representatives of charities like War on Want, and speakers like Owen Jones, Caroline Lucas of the Green Party and Jeremy Corbyn of the Labour Party. They were incredibly inspiring, especially as there was so much representation and diversity within the people who were striking from school and work and the speakers and organisations. There were people from Bolivia, against colonisation, nature charities, anti-capitalist charities, children from schools, the organisers of the strike...

I have been inspired by so many people who are raising awareness for the climate and the organisations who are creating events and resources to help reach even more people. They are essential to spreading the message online and helping people to learn about the issues which are so important for being able to change the system.

Immy Lucas and the movement she created called the Low Impact Movement to encourage people on a journey to zero waste and veganism.

The comprehensive pieces of writing by Francesca Willow on Ethical Unicorn about issues surrounding sustainability and social justice.

The organisation called Global Climate Strike where all of the information about the strike was put together.

350.org are an organisation who have been working for the climate cause for a long time and there was an article about all the strikes in Europe.

I read a Guardian article recently about how this climate crisis will be the Sixth Mass Extinction the planet has seen.

YouthStrike4Climate and UK Student Climate Network were the two organisations organising the strike in the UK.

Extinction Rebellion have a really great guide to the climate emergency, organise events around the UK and have resources and posters to use for when you want to take action.
